Sidewall & Kerb Damage

Scraped a wall in a narrow lane? Sidewall damage can't be repaired — but we carry the replacement.

Why a sidewall can't be patched

The sidewall is what holds the tyre's structure together under load. Once it's cut, gouged or bulging, that structure is compromised and no repair is permitted under BS AU 159 — not by us, not by anyone. A garage that offers to patch a sidewall is doing something they shouldn't.

How to tell

Look at the smooth vertical wall of the tyre, not the tread. Cuts, gouges, a visible bulge or egg shape, or any fabric or wire showing all mean replacement. If it's only surface scuffing on the raised lettering with no cut into the rubber, it may well be fine — send us a photo and we'll tell you honestly.

Why we see so much of it

The lanes between Modbury, Kingsbridge and Salcombe are the worst for it — high stone banks, no verge, and passing places that force you tight against the wall. It's the single most common job we do in the South Hams, and it's why we carry the stock to fix it on the spot.
